Mature trees, roots and older pipes
Tall oaks and maples shade many Falls Church streets, and their roots search for moisture. Older sewer laterals made of clay or cast iron have joints that roots can enter, causing slow drains and, eventually, backups. A backup often shows up at the lowest fixture in the house, such as a basement floor drain or a first-floor tub.
Leaves and needles fill gutters and downspouts as well. When gutters overflow, water runs down the wall and collects at the foundation. That moisture can reach a crawlspace or a basement and, over time, damage framing, insulation and flooring.
